2016: Talk less, Do more.

I usually don’t do New Year’s resolutions (because I realized I’m really bad at keeping them and the extra stress doesn’t really help). Instead, I started a few years back to think of things I’d like to do for myself in the coming year – read a certain book, take a vacation and see a friend, or eat a pound of ice cream for breakfast. So this year I’m thinking about things that went well this year and what I’d like to do more of next year, and also what I’d like to do less of.

In 2016 I want to talk less, and do more.

I want to talk less, claim less space and give more room to other voices. New voices, diverse voices, voices that have more urgency. I do want to do more though – make everything I say weigh more, produce less white noise filling twitter and blogs and other spaces. I want to give back.

So I’m going to retweet even more. Give more explicit following commendations on twitter. Promote more articles and persons. And I’m hoping some of you might do the same. But I also want to give something back to this community of amazing people that supported me over the last years. Something that is more tangible than retweets and endorsement.

In return, this is what I’m offering to several women*:

  • Talk/Presentation coaching (3 slots): we can discuss your ideas for talks for any occasion, go over your proposal, work on it. Alternatively, if you already have a talk/presentation (no matter if university, event or other) lined up, I will sit down with you and give feedback on it as best I can. We can do this face to face if applicable, or via Skype.
  • Share a talk/presentation (1 slot): in case I’m giving a talk somewhere I’m willing to split the space/presentation with you, as long as our topics align and the teamwork works well for both us and the talk. I’m trying this for the first time, so I hope this works out. Unfortunately I can’t cover any travel expenses yet, but I’m more than willing to help you apply for travel funds or find any other ways if necessary. You can check out stuff I talk about here. We can do this face to face if applicable, or via Skype.
  • Furthermore, there’s a standing open invitation to any first-in-family-students to get back to me with any questions or need for support for anything studies-related!

*(women of color, disabled women, trans/nb-women and women from non-academic backgrounds will be preferred if there are more prospects than slots)

If you’re interested in taking any of these slots, please let me know by mail or on twitter. I strongly encourage you to write, even if you’re unsure, even if you don’t think you deserve it, or feel any other impostor syndrome. I do see this as an opportunity for both of us to learn and improve. I’ll leave this open until January 31st 2016 and then select (or roll the dice, if necessary) some great people to work with!  I’ll just leave this open and close if necessary <3

Lastly, I also would like to encourage anyone with privileges and the ability to share to take from this article what you need (CC-BYNC 3.0 license applies) and do the same in 2016! Let’s give people more space. Let’s talk less, do more.

And to everyone struggling, taking self-care breaks and other things in their lives that leave them barely enough for themselves: You’re amazing. Keep going! <3
